Kathy Cano-Murillo, founder

Self-portrait, 2011
Hi! I founded the group in 2005 as a way to unite women from different backgrounds to celebrate art and culture. The one thing we have in common is that we all are inspired by one way or another by Frida Kahlo. I am inspired by the way Frida was very independent and no matter what her situation or obstacle, she always found a way to do what she loved - creating art. In addition to her paintings, she was also an avid crafter.

I'm a hard workin' mamacita. I juggle my family along with a full-time art and writing career.
I've been married to my best friend, Patrick, for 20 years. We have two super sweet, talented and creative kids. I want to be remembered for positive actions. I want to prove that you can have non-traditional "dreamer" goals and actually achieve them through hard work.

I spent years as an entertainment newspaper reporter and craft columnist for The Arizona Republic. I have seven published craft books, including: CRAFTY CHICA'S GUIDE TO ARTFUL SEWING: FABU-LOW-SEW IDEAS FOR THE EVERYDAY CRAFTER (Potter Craft/Random House).
I'm a binge crafter and artist who found a way to make a living out of it. Life is too short not to do whatcha love, right? My biggest challenge is that I'm addicted to bright colors, hi-gloss varnish and glitter. My designs often tend to lean that way. I break out in hives if I try to design with pastels, muted tones or monochromatic color schemes.
